Nếp than đãi qua nhiều lần nước cho thật sạch, ngâm gạo qua đêm với một ít muối.
Khoai sọ gọt vỏ, rửa sạch, ngâm vào thau nước muối để ra bớt chất nhớt. Rửa khoai sọ lại cho thật sạch, cắt hạt lựu lớn.
Nếp than sau khi ngâm, đãi lại cho sạch, cho nếp than vào nồi, đun sôi đến khi ăn thử thấy hạt nếp mềm.
Cho tiếp khoai sọ vào đun cùng, thêm đường vào. Đun lửa thật nhỏ, thỉnh thoảng dùng muôi khuấy đều để phần nếp không bị dính vào đáy nồi.
Đổ từ từ nước cốt dừa vào nồi chè, vừa đổ vừa khuấy đến khi đặc lại, nêm nếm lại đường cho vừa ăn. Đun khoảng thêm 5 phút thì tắt bếp, thêm ống vani vào, dùng muôi khuấy nhẹ tay.
Múc chè ra chén, rắc vài cọng dừa sợi lên bề mặt, dùng nóng hay nguội đều ngon.
